4. Jessica Jones

This show is based on the comic book character, Jessica Jones, and is a Netflix Original Series. It was created by Melissa Rosenberg, a screenwriter with an impressive resume, working on and writing for shows like The O.C. and Dexter, and movies like Step Up and the Twilight saga. Jessica Jones is quite different from those though. It is a dark drama, and addicting as it is, awful things just keep happening. Even when you think things are finally going well–BAM!– tragedy. However, this show is fantastic because Jessica is a flawed heroine, battling her dark past and trying to help those in the present. Her best friend is her adopted sister that she grew up with, and their strong bond influences Jessica’s will to help others and keep going in the face of her own adversity. Their friendship, love, acceptance, and protection allows them to support one another in the dark world they live in. Plenty of major characters are female, diverse, and complicated, making them realistic and more interesting to watch. We can expect Season 2 in 2018, with the plan of all 13 episodes being directed by women. About time!
