Creating a war scene with actual soldiers.

The use of propaganda is so relentless now, it’s hard to believe there was a time it didn’t consume the media. Netflix’s Five Came Back is a three-part documentary on how Hollywood directors set up scenes during WWII in order to capture war footage from the men who were fighting (and dying) around them. Several of today’s most famous directors (Stephen Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro, Francis Ford Coppola, and Lawrence Kasdan) cover the top directors during the war (Frank Capra, John Ford, George Stevens, William Wyler, and Huston), admiring, but also critiquing their work, and the circumstances. The result of their work culminated in churning out a compelling story of the war, and what it meant to be (or looked to be) in the frontlines. This documentary comes at an interesting time in our present history. Propaganda, on both sides, is always about telling the most compelling story possible. How easily will the public be sucked in?
