"Girl, you're so young, but you see everything."

The call for media to depict women as they truly are has grown. For decades, probably centuries, women’s self-esteem has taken major hits from depictions in film, television, ads, and commercials. The “perfection” in how women in media look seems an impossible goal. Airbrushing and expensive products the average women can’t afford have been used to make women on the screen and the page appear to have no scars, no damage, no excess weight, and perfect skin.

Dove, Girlgaze, and Getty Images have started the #ShowUs initiative to call on media to show women in a more honest light.

The center of the project is a stock photo collection of over 5,000 of women taken by women or non-binary. These photos are natural—no airbrushing. Real women being shown as they are.
