Why Are All Italian Versions of Hollywood Movies Still Dubbed?

A new documentary It's Better in Italian goes behind the scenes with Italy's unsung movie heroes...

When it comes to watching Hollywood films, the Italians do it differently than almost every country on Earth. Instead of having subtitles, Italian films are dubbed, meaning that even though the actors appear to be speaking English, it's Italian that the audience hears.

Far from producing shoddy results, Italian dubbers are geniuses at their craft. Some dubbers, like Ferruccio Amendola, dub certain major stars for years, and effectively become as important to the perception of the star as the star him or herself.

We reviewed a documentary short called It's Better in Italian for a Short on Shorts episode coming out in a couple weeks. It follows some top Italian dub artists as they practice their strange and fascinating craft, and even introduces a Hollywood star to his Italian voice. Check out the trailer below.
